Work in Progress

October 26, 2010

I’m making changes to my business, to my website, to my life… I wanted to send out something that would update you on those changes. As I was thinking about what to say I realized that my business and my life have always been a work in progress. And I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Do you feel the same way about your business?

About your life? I’m not saying my way is the right way. But since you asked (you did ask, didn’t you?) I’ll give you my two cents worth. I figure that if a business (or life) isn’t a work in progress it’s stagnant. Stagnant=not moving, not flowing, putrefying…

Stable vs. stagnant
Stable has its place. I’m a big fan of grounding your business. I guess it’s really all about balance. But too much stability means you’re not in the moment. It means you’re confusing comfort and the illusion of control with having a foundation. Stable means you have a foundation, a base from which to operate, to create, to make your impact.

In yoga when you practice a series of flowing, moving poses you need a stable foundation in every pose or you’ll topple over. In the name of not toppling over (and we’ve rec

ently heard too many stories of businesses toppling over) people too often hang onto to staying in one place.

In yoga we grip the mat with our toes, we hold our breath, we tighten our jaw. In business, well, we often do the same things. You know those tight muscles in your back and neck? Could be from too much holding on.

Two questions for you.

1)    How would you describe the stable foundation of your business?

2)    What in your business is calling for change?

Consider posting your responses to the two questions. Your ideas help inspire others. Plus, if you publicly state where your business is calling for change, you’ll be more likely to take action.

Your reset button?

July 26, 2010

This morning I woke up planning a mental to-do list.  I wanted to write a blog post, plus work on my proposal for my book. I also have some research and writing for the business class I teach at Oregon School of Massage. That reminded me that I need to grade homework for the class. Plus I planned on working out. And that’s the beginning of my list.

When I notice that I have 34 programs running on my computer and that my mind has at least that many more programs up and running it’s time to hit my “reset button.” Periodically I need a big reset. A weekend away or a couple of weeks somewhere other than home.  But I’ve found I don’t feel as desperate for a complete system overhaul if I include regular resets in my life.

My daily reset is meditation. Today the message I got was that all that other “important” stuff wasn’t really important. What was important today was to be of service, to feel loved and to allow love in. In a few breaths my perspective changed.

How do you know it’s time to hit your reset button? And then how do you reset? Sharing your ideas here helps others. I know I’d love to hear your ide

When I entered the Next Top Spiritual Author contest I told a few people that I’d entered for the experience. They asked why I wasn’t in it to win.

Hmmm…Made me think. I changed my attitude and decided to participate in a different way. I was in it to win and I lost.

But I don’t feel like a loser. My ego would have liked to be part of the 25 chosen for round 3. But when I move into a place of trust, I know that I’m on the right path, right place, right time.

Why I feel like a winner

  1. I felt supported by you! I felt support for my book idea from family, friends, colleagues, former students, even other participants in the competition. All that support felt lovely. I also heard that others believe in the idea of creating and running a Practically Enlightened Business.
  2. Having to clarify my ideas for the book and its promotion really helped me feel, well, clearer.
  3. I wrote. Nothing like having a deadline to get me writing most days. And I enjoyed writing (at least most of the time.)
  4. I learned. I learned how to use a video camera and how to upload a video to YouTube. I learned more about the world of publishing. I learned from getting feedback for my writing. And I love to learn.
  5. I gained momentum. Now I have the habit, so even without a deadline from the contest I’ll keep going.

So thank you for your support and congrats to those continuing in the competition.

For me I’m working on a more in-depth proposal and will be submitting my idea to agents and publishers in the upcoming months. Will let you know how it goes.

When I joined the contest I encouraged you to stretch yourself as well. I’m wondering if you took my challenge and how it’s going for you?

Want to Join Team Practically Enlightened?

I’m looking for a team. Why? As you probably know I’m working on Practically Enlightened Business: Your Body Mind Spirit Approach. The book’s my entry into the Next Top Spiritual Author contest. You can still vote for my entry by heading to I’ll know late next week if I made round three.

If I’m continuing in the competition I’ll be polishing two more chapters for submission. If I don’t continue in the contest, then I will be polishing and writing chapters to either  1) submit my book to publishers or 2) to self publish as an e-book.

I’m looking for a small, yet diverse group who will be willing to give me some feedback on the book content. Are you?

  • An entrepreneur (or aspiring entrepreneur) who considers themselves spiritual. You do not need to be a massage therapist.
  • Interested or intrigued by the idea of using a body, mind, spirit approach for creating and growing your business.
  • Willing and able to give me some honest feedback about the content of the book.
  • Willing to commit about an hour to 1.5 hours every week for the next month.

Here’s my part of the commitment.

  • I will provide written content with a specific request for feedback. Often it will be a meditation or exercise that I’d like you to try. Sometimes it will provide a section I’d like you to read and comment on.
  • I will provide some group coaching just for the team members via teleclass.
  • I will acknowledge you in the book.
  • I will provide you with a copy of the book when it’s published.

Sound like something you’d like to be a part of? What’s next?

  • Read the first chapter of Practically Enlightened Business: Your Body Mind Spirit Approach. You’ll find it at
  • Reply to this email with a bit of information about yourself.
  1. If you’re currently self-employed tell me a little about your business? If you’re not self-employed are you planning to be in the future? If so, what kind of business?
  2. Why would you like to be a part of Team Practically Enlightened?
  3. What would you like to get from the experience?
  4. Can you commit to 1.5 hour a week for the next month?
  5. What time zone do you live in?
